Jakarta blasts: Indonesian police round up six more suspected militants

Police search the house of a suspect who they identified as one of the people killed in Thursday's gun and bomb attack in central Jakarta, in Meruya, Jakarta, January 15, 2016 in this photo taken by Antara Foto.

 One of the five slain Jakarta attackers, Arif Sunakim, had served a seven-year jail sentence for attending a militant training camp, while another - unnamed by the police - had been previously been arrested for possessing ammunition during a trip to Indonesia by US President Barack Obama.

On Saturday, Indonesian police said[1] they had arrested 12 people in raids across the country, including a man they believe handled financing for the attacks, money authorities allege came from IS.

Returning to the area outside Jakarta's oldest department store, Sarinah, where Thursday's attack unfolded, the city's police chief said the rise of Islamic State was a cause for serious concern.

Another 20 people were injured, some of them reported to remain in critical condition.

National police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti told[2] reporters that Thursday's attack was funded by ISIS through Bahrun Naim, a leader of a Southeast Asian unit affiliated to ISIS called Katibah Nusantara. The message was circulated by ISIS supporters on Twitter late Thursday.

Four Hudson River crossings - the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and the George Washington and Tappan Zee Bridges - were shut down. In Belmar, the wind drove a sailboat out of its marina and tangled its mast in overhead wires, knocking out power.

The secretary general of the United Nations has condemned the bombings and gun attacks in Jakarta and expressed "his solidarity with the government and people of Indonesia".

Police spokesman Anton Charliyan said another attacker, whose name was not revealed, was also a former terrorism convict.

The IS link, if proved, poses a grave challenge to Indonesian security forces because until now the group was known only to have sympathizers with no active cells capable of planning and carrying out such an attack. "We offer our full support to the Indonesian authorities during this challenging time", he said in a statement Thursday.

Monday forecast: Mostly sunny; highs in upper 40s to lower 50s[4]
The chance of showers is expected to decrease to 20 percent Thursday evening, which should be mostly cloudy with a low around 42. A high temperature of 47 is expected Monday with a 40 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Raids were also under way across other parts of the populous island of Java and on other islands to round up suspects behind the attack, Reuters[5] reported.

The alleged mastermind behind the Jakarta attack, an Indonesian citizen fighting with Islamic State in Syria[6], is believed to have used social media extensively to share his beliefs about the group and communicate with contacts in Indonesia using blog posts and mobile messaging apps.

"Another victim who was in a coma since the beginning died last night", Jakarta police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal said, in confirming the latest death.

The agency admitted this week that it should have acted sooner, and the regional EPA head resigned on Thursday. Locally, New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1920 Eddy Henry Way, Sandusky are taking donations of bottled water.

The Jakarta attack, following the extremist assaults in San Bernardino, Paris and Istanbul, suggests that the ability of IS to direct or inspire attacks around the world is building, he said.

The militant then left Indonesia, and is in Raqqa, "as part of the high ranks of ISIS", Karnavian said. "Be patient. When the case is closed and things are clear, we will disclose them".
